League Overview

The Glenwood-Glen Head Junior Baseball league was founded in 1955 as a baseball program for 5 to 12 year old boys. Four teams played that first year. In 1997, 356 boys and girls, ages 5 to 13, played on 20 regular season teams. Teams are formed by age group in March. Play begins in mid-April and continues through the middle of June when schools recess. Thereafter, selected players play on travel teams in local tournaments from mid-June through mid-August. Teams meet after school and on weekends for games and practices. The days and times vary from week to week according to field availability and, of course, weather.

Most games are played at Gaynor Park located behind the Town of Oyster Bay Community Center at 200 Glen Head Road in Glen Head. Games may also be played at North Shore High School (National League) at 450 Glen Cove Ave., the North Shore Middle School (J.G. International league) at 505 Glen Cove Ave., and Glen Head Elementary School (American League). Click here for a local map.

In all age groups, teams are organized by the league and games are supervised by the Managers of the two teams and the Umpire . The Managers are helped on the field by up to three Coachs who my coach first or third base, keep the score book, or organize the dugout. In addition, a Manager may assign a Team Parent to help organize off field team activites.

Playing rules are the rules of baseball as modified by the League Rules Committee to suit the needs of the players. League operating rules are established by the Officers and Board of Directors. League officers are Commisioner, Vice-Commisioner, Secretary, and Treasurer. These officers sit with 13 other elected volunteers who operate the league as its Board of Directors. They, like all other adult volunteers, are unpaid. The league is incorporated as a non-profit orgainization. Therefore, gifts to the league are tax deductible.
